Geography Department

Geography is an intergrated study of the earth’s places, societies, enviroments and landscapes.
Geographers study, analyse and record knowledge about siginificant patterns of people and natural phenomena and relate these characteristics to human activities.

Geography is one of the compulsary subjects at 0-level (senior 1-4) . In the advanced level (sinior 5-6), it becomes optional depending on what combination one offers. Such combinations that have geography as one of the principle subjects include: HEG, DEG,LEG ,MEG ,HDG, HLG, HED/G ,HEL/G , etc.

The above combinations are obtained basing on one’s performance at o-level. For one to offer geography at A-level, he/she should have scored either a Distinction (D1 or D2) or a strong credit pass (C3 or C4) at o-level.
At O-level, there are two examinable papers of geography (1&2). Paper 1 is called “East Africa” Which has section A with objectives , B with map work & photographic interpretation & C with field work and theory—Examination code is 273.Paper 2 is called “The Rest of Africa” which has section A with question on Africa, B with North America & C with Rhine Lands.

The Geography department has got a number of activities carried out in the course of the academic year.

In term one; we basically do a lot of teaching together with regular assessment tests. This is targeted at covering a big portion of the syllabus, we also engage students in field studies ,hold both internal & external seminars , Academic interactions in form of discussions, weekly tests , and also expose our students to various sets of external examinations

In term 3, we emphasize class discussions, revision of various topics in the syllabi ,consultation of teachers and invitation of external examiners to give students tips on how to attempt examination questions

The performance of the students over the years has been stably improving.

  1. The first A-level attempt ( 2001), we had about 50 Percent of principle passes.
  2. In (2002),we improved and had over 60 percent.
  3. At O-level in (2001), we had over 60 percent candidates who passed geography sat for the examination that year . looking at trend above, there was great improvement. Our hope is to have even better results this year (2003).

The department has got future plans of acquiring more text books, pamphlets, atlases; charts magazines and question books. These will expose our students to wider research sources and U.N.E.B questions therefore, improving on their question approach.

At tertiary institutions, there are many professional courses that one can do such as, B.A (Education),B.A (Urban planning),B.A(Tourism),B.A(Arts),B.A(Environmental management) etc. these can lead one to become lecturer ,An urban planner, land/water manager or an environmental scientist respectively . these positions are available in the public sector, Research organizations, mapping and surveying firms, publishing industry, Travel agencies and manufacturing firms.”As a result of doing Geography!”

Geography as a subject is very important in that any one who successfully qualify in it will at least be some where and not become a failure in life .Most Geographers are job makers than job seekers .This explains why there are not many Geographers who are jobless.

Many natural happenings /calamities have been detected ,avoided or curbed by the geographers. Geography being a living subject , nothing or no calamity is to take place , the public is always warned in advance by the geographers so as to limit its destructive rate e.g. land slides , earth quakes , volcanic eruptions, floods ,drought, famine etc.

The practical bit of geography (field work ) especially is very interesting. It involves taking students to the field (out of school) where they will carry out research and discover several features and phenomena .they practi9cally come into contact with most of the features that they have been told about in the class or read in text books /pamphlets .e.g. a plug, a spur ,a cliff, an arette, an elephant e.t.c
